WhatsApp announced on July 28, 2026 that it is rolling out a new set of calling features, including audio and video calls directly from WhatsApp Web, call transfers between devices, a waiting room for group calls, QuickHD video, and noise suppression. The web calling update is the most significant of the five.
Until now, WhatsApp calls required either the mobile app or the desktop application downloaded and installed on a device. The new feature allows users to make and receive one-on-one and group calls directly from a browser, with no app download required, and includes the same features available on other devices including screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab with full call history and favourites.
WhatsApp says calls made through WhatsApp Web remain end-to-end encrypted, have no time limits, and are available at no additional cost.
The feature targets users on shared computers, work laptops that restrict app downloads, or anyone who prefers to stay in the browser, which in many African markets represents a significant portion of the user base.
The four additional features address specific friction points in the calling experience.
Call Transfer allows users to move an active group call between devices without disconnecting.
The Waiting Room feature lets group call hosts place participants in a virtual holding area until they are ready to admit them, controllable through a "Require approval to join" setting when creating a call link.
QuickHD delivers high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call rather than letting quality improve gradually after the connection stabilises.
Noise Suppression removes background sound so the caller's voice comes through clearly in noisy environments, manageable at any time through in-call settings.
For Nigerian businesses and professionals who use WhatsApp as a primary communication tool, the web calling update removes a meaningful constraint. The inability to call from a browser has pushed users toward Zoom or Google Meet for calls on office computers.
WhatsApp can now cover that use case natively, keeping communication within a single platform rather than requiring a switch to a separate app.
The Waiting Room feature is particularly relevant for creators, educators, and professionals who share WhatsApp call links publicly. Without it, a shared call link functions like an open door.
With approval controls, the host maintains full authority over who enters and when.WhatsApp says all features are rolling out gradually and will be available to everyone soon.
