MTN Nigeria Has 100 Million Subscribers. No Nigerian Telecom Company Has Ever Done This.

MTN Nigeria ended July 2026 with 100.86 million active subscribers, becoming the first telecom operator in Nigeria's history to cross the 100 million user threshold.

The milestone was confirmed by Nigerian Communications Commission data released on September 11, 2026. MTN added 2.22 million new lines in July alone, approximately 31,000 new subscribers every day, making it the company's strongest monthly growth so far in 2026 and its largest single-month surge since November 2024.

The operator now controls 51.76 per cent of Nigeria's mobile market. For every four mobile phone users in Nigeria, at least two are MTN subscribers. Airtel sits in a distant second position with 66.76 million subscribers and a 34.26 per cent market share.

Globacom follows with 23.63 million subscribers, while T2 Mobile, formerly 9mobile, recorded 3.61 million. MTN and Airtel together hold roughly 86 per cent of all subscriptions in the Nigerian market, leaving the remaining operators to compete for a significantly smaller share.

What Makes the Timing Significant

The 100 million milestone is commercially significant on its own. What makes it particularly notable is the context in which it was achieved. In the months leading up to July, MTN Nigeria was at the centre of sustained consumer backlash over rapid data depletion and billing transparency, a controversy that spread widely on social media and prompted the company to take an unusual step: hosting a public "Data on Trial" inquest in which it invited scrutiny of its billing practices in a visible, structured format.

Most large companies facing that kind of criticism respond with press releases and customer service improvements that happen quietly. MTN chose a more transparent path, holding a public forum that acknowledged the concerns, presented its own data, and invited direct questioning.

The commercial outcome of that decision is now visible in the July subscriber numbers. The backlash did not slow the company's growth. The month it peaked coincided with MTN adding more subscribers than in any previous month of 2026.

MTN Nigeria also invested ₦620.5 billion, approximately $449.6 million, in network infrastructure, spectrum, and fibre backhaul in the first half of 2026 to manage skyrocketing data demand. That investment provides the infrastructure context for the subscriber growth: the company was simultaneously adding capacity and adding users, which is the right sequencing for sustainable growth in a market where network quality is a persistent complaint.

Nigeria's total active telephone subscriber base stood at 195.11 million in July 2026, with a teledensity of 90 per cent. Mobile data consumption reached a record 1.66 million terabytes in the month, extending a four-month upward trend. Broadband subscriptions rose to 124.4 million, pushing broadband penetration to 57.4 per cent.

The 100 million milestone gives MTN a significantly larger base from which to grow revenue across data, fintech, home broadband, and other digital services.

The challenge ahead is not attracting users, which the July numbers suggest is not a problem. It is ensuring the network can sustain the quality of experience that 100 million active subscribers at different usage levels and in different parts of the country will demand.
